As every collector of the POTF2 line knows, when Kenner/Hasbro released the astromech droid R5-D4 as part of the wave celebrating the Special Editions in 1997 it was with quite a bit of controversy. Besides being overall ugly as compared to the R2-D2 figure which came out 2 years prior, the droid had some very odd attachments on it. Namely, 2 blasters on the legs, and a missile which shot out of the droid's top. Many believed that R5-D4 originally started off as the proposed "Attack R2-D2" of 1996. But no pictures or prototypes of that figure have surfaced, but its safe to assume this was true.
The corrections and pacifications to this figure were quite simple. I sliced off the leg blasters, sanding the remaining stubs and painting them silver. I cut off the piece of plastic which connected the two legs together, giving them individual movement. I also removed the missile from inside the figure, using it for other projects. Its a simple custom to be made, almost everyone who's work I've seen has made this figure and if you can fine a spare, like I did during the clearances of 97, this is a good way to start off customizing.
