Lady Lumiya started out in the old Marvel Comics series as a character named Shira Brie. She seemed to be a possible romantic interest for Luke Skywalker, and she was a hotshot pilot for the Rebellion. One mission had her and Luke flying TIE Fighters and Shira was shot down and killed by none other than Luke himself.
But Shira did not die. In fact, unbeknownst to the Rebellion, she was an Imperial agent sent to infiltrate the Rebels by none other than Darth Vader. When she was semmingly killed, Vader's troops recovered her body and rebuilt it into a cybernetic form similar to the Dark Lord. Vader trained her in the Dark Side and she became an Imperial agent once more.
After the Battle of Endor, Lumiya encountered Princess Leia and tried to have her imprisoned. Leia did not Lumiya due to the new battle armor she wore. Later, Lumiya arranged an invasion fleet of the Nagai to attack the Rebel forces, and had a duel against Luke Skywalker. Luke did recognize Lumiya as Shira, and defeated her in combat. Lumiya escaped and appeard a final time in the last chapters of the Marvel series.
On StarWars.com, the databank entry for Lumiya claims that she also had a few students of her own: one being Flint, who became a Dark Lord in an issue of the Marvel series; the other being Carnor Jax, a Royal Guard from the CRIMSON EMPIRE series.
