This custom was planned for months before I actually did anything with it....I even posted a rumor about it on YakFace at one point.
The knees were a challenge of course, but I figured out a simple, yet dangerous way t do it. I cut the knees to try and make the interlocking pieces. This worked out so well, I couldn't wait to make more customs! (Which I did of course...My Jedi High Council!)
First thing I did was drill a hole through the sides of the knees to create the axis for the articulation. Then, I cut the knees as shown in blue in the picture at left. After comparing the two, I decided that the left leg looked better. Now, in order for him to actually bend his knees, you will need to carve away the back of his thighs a bit, to give it some room to fold into. Keep the shaved parts though, as I used them to stick through the hole! It acts as a rod to bend on, but also keeps the parts together.
The hardest part of this job was the chair. It is pieced together from various parts of toys, and sort of matches the image (shown below). The base is the console that comes with EV-9D9. I cut it off and turned it over, so it gave him a seat. The monitor arm and the foot rest arm are parts of the torture rack that came with 8D8. The foot pads are those little plastic things that hold the wires together that come in all boxed toys...gotta do something with them! The microphone is just a paperclip, and the seat is a foam piece from a pair of headphones. Hey, he's gotta be comfortable!
